There are more child amputees in Gaza than anywhere else in the world.

On 19 July, I’ll be taking part in the Big Ride for Palestine 2025 to support and raise funds for the Gaza Sunbirds, Palestine’s first paracycling team.

In 2018, champion cyclist Alaa al-Dali was on the brink of representing Palestine at the Asian Championships. At a peaceful protest for freedom, an Israeli sniper shattered the leg that powered his dreams.

But Alaa didn’t stop.

Together with Karim Ali, he co-founded the Gaza Sunbirds, a team of Palestinian amputee athletes riding beyond their injuries. Over the past year and a half, they’ve helped deliver over £430,000 in aid; cycling food and medicine through the rubble of Gaza, where ambulances couldn’t reach.

Despite unimaginable loss, some members recently made history by leaving Gaza to compete in the Para-Cycling World Championships.

Most of the Sunbirds team remain in Gaza where they are distributing aid to their communities.

I’m raising £500 to support the Sunbirds in continuing their work; delivering life-saving aid on the ground and carrying Palestine’s flag on the global stage.

Funds go through Amos Trust, a UK-registered charity that supports justice and equal rights in Palestine.
