Story
Every week in the UK at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed cardiac conditions.
As you may know, both Paul and Gemma have been diagnosed with heart conditions and are now able to be safely monitored through CRY.
Paul's story started in 2019, while at rugby training, he suffered from a sudden cardiac arrest. He received life saving treatment by the physios and air paramedics at the scene. Air lifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, he was admitted for observation and a series of tests. Three weeks and a surgery later, Paul left hospital fitted with an ICD (Implantable cardioverter defibrillator). Paul's life looks a little different today as he is no longer able to play professional rugby and is still adjusting to having an ICD, however he is grateful to have received treatment and care at such a critical time.
Gemma was diagnosed with Brugada Syndrome at the age of 16 after completing heart condition testing. Brugada Syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by a disruption of the normal heart rhythm and is just one of many conditions that can cause sudden cardiac deaths. Gemma's family have been significantly impacted by undiagnosed heart conditions. Knowing that she has the gene for Brugada, Gemma is monitored at the Inherited Heart Conditions Clinic at St George's Hospital every 18 months to complete tests such as ECGs, exercise testing, 24 hour halters, and echocardiograms to check for advances in her condition.
Paul and Gemma want to run the Royal Park Half marathon to raise money and awareness for young people living with heart conditions. With your donation, CRY can reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac deaths by working with cardiologists and family doctors to establish good practice and appropriate screening facilities to promote and protect cardiac health.
By supporting CRY you will help save young lives from these potentially fatal cardiac conditions. See how your support can help by visiting www.c-r-y.org.uk
Thank you so much for supporting us! We are so excited to run the Royal Parks Half! And no, we didn’t meet in the waiting room of the heart conditions clinic!
