Gemma's fundraiser for NSPKU

Gemma Knowles is raising money for NSPKU

Half Marathon at Finsbury Park London · 21 June 2026

Exists to help & support people with PKU, their families & carers. It works closely with medical professionals in the UK. It receives no government funding & is dependent on the generosity of its members & the public to fund practical support, raising awareness & research into the condition.

Story

I’m running a half marathon to raise money for PKU research.

When our youngest daughter was born, we had no idea that a routine newborn screening test would change our lives. Shortly after, we were told she had Phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare metabolic disease that means her body cannot process protein in the same way as most people.

We haven’t shared much about Ivy’s condition until now, simply because it has been a lot for us to process as a family. Coming to terms with a lifelong condition, learning how to manage it, and adjusting our daily lives has taken time, energy, and strength.

PKU affects our lives every single day. Ivy follows an incredibly strict diet and takes supplements and medication three times a day. It requires constant planning, monitoring, and care - things that often go unseen by others.

Despite this, Ivy is thriving. We are so fortunate that her condition was picked up early, allowing us to begin treatment from birth. Because of this, she is developing perfectly. However, without strict management, PKU can lead to serious, life-changing complications, including brain damage.

As a family, this journey has taught us so much about resilience, patience, and the importance of support.

That’s why I’ve decided to run a half marathon. Every mile I run is for Ivy, and for all the families living with PKU.

I’m hoping to raise money to support awareness, research, and families affected by PKU. If you’d like to support the cause by donating or simply sharing this post then it would mean the world to us.

I am lucky to have my Sophie joining me on this challenge, so we are currently training hard an clocking in the miles :)

Thank you to my Husband, parents and all our family and friends for all the support since Ivy has been born and the encouragement for this challenge.
