Gemma's Ironman fundraiser for Barrow Farm Riding for the Disabled

Gemma Newbery is raising money for Barrow Farm Riding for the Disabled

Ironman Emilia Romagna · 20 September 2025

At Barrow Farm RDA we aim to enable people with special needs and disabilities to develop their skills and enrich their lives through riding. We are a specially equipped riding centre in mid Essex providing riding and carriage driving opportunities to people with special needs and disabilities.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

With my 40th birthday fast-approaching, I decided it was high time for a full existential crisis, and set about seeking a purpose for the upcoming year... Signing up to a full Ironman (having never done a triathlon) appeared to be the obvious answer, so here I am.. drowning - literally and metaphorically - in a full training schedule, and with only 4 months remaining.

To make this endeavour more worthwhile, I am raising funds for Barrow Farm Riding for the Disabled, a local charity, based in Essex. It is not only the chosen Master's Charity of the Worshipful Company of Insurers, but also one that is personal to those of us at S A Meacock, as one of our longstanding colleagues, Shelley, takes her son Fraser to ride at the centre. In Shelley's words:

“My son Fraser is 12 years old. He rides his trusted companion, a pure white horse called Owly, every Saturday morning supported by dedicated staff members and volunteers – they explore the woods, the country lane and play games in the outdoor and indoor menages. As a full-time wheelchair user, being on horseback gives Fraser a freedom that he would not otherwise have in his everyday life. His lessons are a joy to watch as he and his friends are always full of beaming smiles!

As well as riding and carriage driving for disabled people, the riding school offer Tea with a Pony for people residing in care homes; they visit the riding school, greet and pat the horses and enjoy a hot drink, cake and companionship. Barrow Farm is a wonderful community, and we feel so lucky to be a part of it – your donation will directly help families like mine create more wonderful memories – thank you”

As a former pony-obsessed child, I can fully appreciate the immeasurable benefits of being around these beautiful creatures. I am proud to be in a position to use my training and participation in this challenge to help benefit those who are less able to move their bodies in the same way, and would be immensely grateful for your support.

***Please note, my Ironman is fully self-funded, so all donations will go direct to Barrow Farm!***
