Story

George Middleton and Rob Moore will be aiming to play every golf course in the York Union over 3 days (216 holes and a minimum of 44 miles). This event is inspired by the incredible journey of Archie Pepper!

Details: 1st round 29th May 2024 - Final round 31st May 2024.

Fundraising event to be held after the final round at Fulford GC from 7:30 on 31st May 2024.

Please take a read of Archie’s story:

Laura’s waters went at 26 weeks and as a result she was shipped around North Yorkshire to any hospital where they had a special care bed in case he was born early. He was eventually born at 35 weeks, in York and spent 11 days in special care with a feeding tube and a ventilator. Once discharged, life went back to normal.

Fast forward a year and Archie had begun to miss a few milestones, Laura had spoken to the Doctors and in the end Archie was given an MRI scan. The scan revealed some white matter in his brain which is known as periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). We are still unsure as to why this happens but essentially it is a part of the brain that cannot send signals which can cause problems with movement, coordination and other functions. The most common symptom with PVL is cerebral palsy, a condition that affects coordination and movement. Cerebral palsy is a very variable condition – some children may only have minor movement problems but others may have severe disabilities. Archie is affected mainly in his lower half and on his right hand side. Along with CP, he has had trouble with muscle tightness (spasticity) as well, which has affected his sleep, walking and general day to day activities. It has meant he needs a frame, and now a wheelchair to get around longer distances

Despite all this Archie lives a VERY full life. He is a typical 5 year old who loves cars, trains and jumping off things. You cant stop him - he is the most determined little person we have ever met.

In September 2023 Archie was accepted into LGI for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomoy (SDR) surgery. A surgical procedure that aims to reduce spasticity in the lower limbs. Here they go into the base of his spione, separate his motor nerves from his sensory ones and then cut 2/3 of the sensory nerves which the aim to reduce spasticity and improve sleep and functional mobility. The surgery meant we were in Leeds for 4 weeks, with 3 weeks of intensive physio everyday to improve strength – Archie had to learn to walk all over again.

The surgery was a success and Archie has gone from strength to Strenth. CP is a lifelong condition for which there is no cure, but all we can do is make his life as full and fun as possible, just like he does every single day.

Scope was one of the first charities we reached out to after we got the diagnosis. Their support, information and help was invaluable in putting our minds at each, helping us prepare for what the diagnosis meant.

Scope are the disability equality charity in England and Wales, and they aim to raise awareness, provide support and fight for a fairer society. We’d like to support this charity and help them in their fight for that fairer society, and so that they can continue to support parents like they did for us.
