Story
Vietnam Trek for Dad
Thank you for exploring my fundraising page. In May of 2022, we received the worst news possible. My Dad, Simon, aged only 49, was diagnosed with an incurable form of cancer; mesothelioma. This cancer lays dormant in the body for 30 years and is caused by exposure to asbestos. Dad's battle only lasted 3 months and he passed away, peacefully on the 21st of August, surrounded by his family at home.
This was made possible by the amazing care provided by Rennie Grove; who have to this day continued to support our family with access to mental health services, counselling and support groups. The dignity and care shown by the care workers are Rennie Grove are second to none. They made sure that his last moments on this earth were pain free and dignified - a service they provide completely free of charge.
You can find out more about the charity via the below:
Rennie Grove is a charity providing specialist care & support for adults and children with life-limiting illnesses in Buckinghamshire & west Hertfordshire. Through our unique hospice at home service, available day & night & a range of day services,we support our patients to live the best quality life they can with a choice about how & where they are cared for towards the end of life. We are also here for the families of our patients, ensuring that everyone can receive the right support, helping make every moment together matter.
This 10 day trip across Vietnam will contain a community project in the village of Mai Chau. The team will stay at a small palliative care unit where we will work alongside the local team to improve facilities. Tasks could include repainting, gardening, decorating and other hands-on refurbishment type tasks.
I'm looking to raise as much money as possible to enable me to sign up for the trip (which includes fees). Rennie Grove will do the rest by providing me with return flights, all transport in country, accommodation, meals, trekking permits, English speaking guides, materials and a tour manager.
Anyone that knew Dad knew he was incredibly charitable, raising money for the likes of Bernardo's Children's Charity and Dementia UK. He was also a massive thrill-seeker and we planned to do various trips across the globe; including Machu Pichu, Everest Base Camp and various other countries.
This for me will be the most physically and mentally difficult challenge I have ever taken on. The prospect of being away for 10 days, the flying, the demand on my body. I take immense comfort in knowing Dad would be so proud of me. Please donate generously!
