The death of a parent, at any age, changes life forever and has devastating emotional impact on top of which there may well be financial implications for the family and the bereaved children. The Trust can't replace a parent but can give financial support and take away at least one burden of worry.

Story

On the 17th of August, we are taking on an Ironman in Copenhagen — a long-distance triathlon consisting of a 3.8km swim, a 180km cycle, and finishing with a full marathon (42.2km). Our goal is simply to complete it. Fewer than 1% of people globally have ever finished one, and with strict cut-off times for the swim and bike stages, it’s a real challenge.

Daniel and I were complete novices when we began training a year ago, especially in swimming and cycling. It's been a steep learning curve, but an incredibly rewarding journey.

Rosie was a great friend during my time at the University of Glasgow. I still remember her teasing me the first time we met — from that moment on, she became a constant in my life. She supported me through the ups and downs of our final years and even encouraged me to apply to study Medicine in Dundee. That decision changed my life: it's where I met my wife.

Rosie and I stayed in touch after university, and she was thrilled when she began the process of joining the Police in late 2021.

Throughout the years, Rosie and her wonderful boys (yes, I’m including Chris in that!) have kept in regular contact, always sending warm wishes for our kids and cheering us on.

True to form, Rosie continued to push me forward. When I told her in December that I was doing an Ironman, her immediate reaction was, “Will you even manage the swim?"

Chris and the boys are an incredible reflection of Rosie’s spirit. We hope to do them — and her — proud.

The Police Children’s Charity provides support to the children of police families who have experienced the devastating loss a parent or medical retirement of a police parent. By helping to ease the financial pressures of bringing up children in the face of life-changing circumstances, the charity ensures that families receive the support they need when it matters most. Through financial assistance, educational support, and wellbeing resources, the charity helps young people rebuild their lives during incredibly difficult times.
