Story
I have been a member of the Y for over 40 years of my life. I started as an 11 year old attending physical education classes at the old downtown YMCA at 3rd and Broadway. That lead me to attend Camp Piomingo one summer. Then later in life as a young father I was member, with each of my 3 sons, of the YMCA Indian Guides program. Then in the 80’s and 90’s, as a downtown office worker I would spend my lunch hours running at the downtown Y at 2nd and chestnut. Currently since 2007 I have been a member of the Southeast Y mostly swimming and later also playing Pickleball and enjoying the community of friends.
Recently I was invited to help Fund Raise for the Southeast Y. The first thing I did was attend several events to learn about all the programs the Y sponsors primarily for the youth of our community, regardless of their ability to pay. Those programs include The Y Safeplace, Summer Day Camps, various youth leadership development and sports programs. That helped me understand the Y is more than just an exercise facility. It is also a 501C charity organization that provides many different opportunities for the youth of Louisville to build character and leadership skills as well as sports.
Attending these Y education events and thinking about my personal Y membership years, I realized I too, was once a young person that also benefited from a Y program that taught me social and leadership skills in a sports oriented safe environment.
The work the YMCA of Greater Louisville does inspire me, and I’m proud to be part of their Annual Campaign to raise money for such an incredible cause. The Y’s efforts are all about helping people in our community, and with your support, we can make an even bigger impact.
