Story
On the 20th December 2024, just 8 days before her 21st birthday, my best friend Olivia was diagnosed with a blood cancer called Nodular Lymphocyte Predominant Hodgkin Lymphoma (NLPHL), a rare sub-type of Hodgkin Lymphoma. NLPHL behaves differently to classical Hodgkin Lymphoma and requires a unique treatment approach, with radiotherapy typically the first step, followed by chemotherapy if needed. It has many similarities to a chronic illness, potentially requiring monitoring and management for most of Liv’s life.
Liv’s cancer was found at Stage 2, with cancerous lumps present in various lymph nodes around her neck area. She is starting radiotherapy treatment on the 17th of March for 3 weeks, followed by a three month monitoring period. It will then be determined whether it was successful, or whether further treatment is required.
I have been absolutely blown away with Liv’s bravery, strength and her overall attitude these past few months. Despite frustrating delays in receiving her PET scan results, having to undergo numerous intense scans, and sadly being forced to delay her final year of her Law degree, she has been incredibly positive, even taking on two jobs and a start-up business to keep herself busy. Still though, it has been an immensely difficult time and has shown us that life as you know it can change in a second. Cancer doesn’t discriminate, and every day we question why cancer has chosen her. This news has of course come as a complete shock to her and those that love her. When you have your health, you have everything, and I am so excited for Liv to overcome this battle and for us to make the memories we have dreamt of as little girls.
So having been inspired by Liv's bravery, I will be taking on my massive fear of heights/ rollercoasters with a wing walk on the 22nd August 2025 in aid of Young Lives vs Cancer. My challenge is to raise a minimum of £1000 before the 25th June 2025. As my best friend of over a decade, Liv knows just how terrified I am of adrenaline-based events (I cried at Thorpe Park at 18 years old). I want to show her that we stand with her on this journey, and that we are so SO proud of her.
Young Lives vs Cancer is an incredible charity that helps those from 0-25 and their families navigate a cancer diagnosis, the treatment process, and life beyond. They provide day-to-day support, financial aid, and ‘limit the damage of cancer’ by helping young people regain control of their lives after treatment.
Every donation and show of support means the world. Thank you <3
