We’re the UK’s leading bowel cancer charity. We’re determined to save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer. Our vision is a future where nobody dies of the disease.

Story

31st August 1998, someone else's choices changed my life forever.

I was 25 years old and a paramedic, a job I loved. I worked in Liverpool and had visited home that bank holiday weekend to spend time with my boyfriend of five years.

A group of us were at a pub and decided to go somewhere to get some food. My boyfriend had a fast car and thought it would be a good laugh to race his friends, I asked him to slow down but he ignored me. We overtook someone on the brow of a hill and had a head on collision. The total impact was 120mph.

The impact was so severe, my passenger seat was pushed behind the drivers seat. The emergency services took an hour to cut me out and I did die at the scene and had to resuscitated. I'd broken my neck, leg, shattered my pelvis, torn my liver, bladder, kidneys and punctured both lungs, so I'd had better days!!

I thought my life was over, but from day one my mum was my champion and told me to never give up. She instilled positivity and stubbornness in me and made me believe that "impossible" is only a word and if you break it down, it becomes "I'm possible".

Even though I've been a permanent wheelchair user for the past 26 years, I've done several fundraising events including a wall climb, a fire walk using friends as aides and bike rides across Belgium and France using a 3 wheeled recumbent bicycle.

Very sadly my mum passed away from bowel cancer in September 2022 and I wanted to do this trek to make her proud knowing that I will help other families going through the same thing.

On September 6th 2025 I'm going to walk up Whernside (one of the 3 Yorkshire Peaks) aided by friends as crutches because I'm unable to walk independently. I know it will be very difficult, but with the support of my friends and family (and mum cheering me on) I know I'll succeed.

My aim is to raise as much money as I can for a worthy cause.

Love and thanks

George xx
