Gerry, Paul, Jo and David are taking on the IOW walking challenge in May to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity, following Alison’s sudden diagnosis last November.
Please read her story.
Every day, 34 people in the UK hear the devastating words, “You have a brain tumour.” And more than 5,000 people lose their lives to this disease each year.
Back in October, Alison was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour which predominately affects young adults(a central neurocytoma) after a short period of illness.
Thankfully, neurocytoma’s are benign and it was fully removed by a wonderful team at St George’s hospital in London. Despite a few post operative complications, Alison is doing well and is continuing to live life to the fullest.
As her tumour was so rare, there is little research into how they grow. This is the same with most brain tumours with brain tumours being the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40. Research offers the only real hope of dramatic improvements in the management and treatment of brain tumours. Over £700m is spent on cancer research in the UK every year, yet less than 3% is spent on brain tumours.
