Story
GFTeam Scotland’s annual Bruce McVitie Open Day is more than just a sporting event — it is a day built on love, remembrance, and community.
On Sunday, 7 June 2026, players, families, and supporters will gather once again to honour the memory of Bruce Jack McVitie, who tragically passed away on 19 March 2017. Bruce was the son of Bobby McVitie, a deeply valued and long-standing member of the club, and his loss continues to be felt by all who knew him.
In the years since, the club has turned grief into something powerful. Determined to celebrate Bruce’s life and support others facing unimaginable loss, they created the “Bruce McVitie Open” — an annual in-house children’s tournament where young athletes come together not only to compete, but to remember.
The day is filled with energy, laughter, and pride, as children take to the mats in Bruce’s name. Yet behind every match is a shared purpose: to give back. All funds raised go to Brightest Star, a charity that provides crucial support to bereaved families during their darkest times.
So far, the event has raised more than £17,000! This year, the team hopes to go even further, continuing to turn heartbreak into hope.
We are calling on the wider community to help make this year’s event the most meaningful yet. Donations, no matter the size, are greatly appreciated, and local businesses are encouraged to support through sponsorship or raffle prizes — a key part of the day’s success in previous years.
For GFTeam Scotland, this is more than fundraising. It is about keeping Bruce’s memory alive, supporting families in need, and showing the power of a community that stands together — in loss, in love, and in lasting tribute.
