Liberty's Legacy is a Special Fund of the Bone Cancer Research Trust raising vital funds for life-saving research into Ewing sarcoma.

Story

I lost my son Gavin to a rare bone cancer, Ewing Sarcoma. Gavin died in September 2021 aged 20 after fighting against the disease all his teenage life. My children are the same ages as Liberty and her family. We live at different ends of the country but become close knowing the occasions which bring joy and those which loss is at the forefront of our minds.

Liberty's Legacy is a special fund of the Bone Cancer Research Trust focused on research into Ewings Sarcoma. We were one of two cases in Scotland the year Gavin was diagnosed, it is that rare and therefore doesn't attract funding as much as other cancers do.

Gavin did take part in clinical trials albeit his treatment regimes are now dropped in favour of other pathways, but he has given hope to others who will receive more effective treatment protocols. ❤️🎗

And now to the madness. Let’s attract some attention here, hey I've got a charity running top but so have thousands of others. So.. My sidekick coming along for the trips is more of a one-off.

Giant Kev, why? Gavin had a wee Kevin the carrot by his bedside during some of his illness. I’m carrying his spirit with me in a way I guess. Of course you ain't getting noticed with something that cant really be seen, hence the hugely scaled up version.

Giant Kev kilted and resplendent in orange is there to grab 1000s of photos. 10000s of cheers and 100000s of "Do you remember the guy who ran with that Giant Kev in the BCRT vest'. That's the aim and some £££s too. Thank you for your support.💙🧡🥕

Treatment protocols for Ewing’s have barely changed in 40 years. 5 year survival rates have remained static at around 50% and for those with metastatic disease, only 20-30%. Yet primary bone cancer as a whole received just 0.027% of funding from the major UK cancer charities in 2020/21. The strength, courage and determination that Gavin, Liberty and all the other kids showed to change these dismal stats despite their age and own adversity are inspiring. Please help continue their Legacy, so that newly diagnosed patients can be given hope and the future every child deserves. For more info: www.bcrt.org.uk/LibertysLegacy
