Cancer Physiotherapist Takes on Gibraltar Strait Swim for STS Charity
Nick Flanagan, Physiotherapist and Cancer Prehabilitation Lead at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, is preparing to take on an extraordinary open water swimming challenge to raise funds for the Trust.
Nick will be swimming from Europe to Africa, by navigating the Strait of Gibraltar, as part of the internationally recognised “Ocean Seven”, a series of the world’s toughest channel swims, often compared to the Seven Summits of mountaineering.
The Gibraltar crossing presents significant challenges, including strong currents, cold water, large killer whale population, and busy shipping lanes where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.
The swim window opens 30/03/26 and closes 08/04/26. Crossing is only possible with the right mix of tides, wind, current and shipping traffic. The swim can start at any time day or night.
Nick said:
“I’m proud to represent STSFT through this challenge. Open water swimming is a huge part of my life, and being able to use it to support the Trust and our patients makes it even more meaningful.”
Every donation will help support the vital work of our teams across South Tyneside and Sunderland.
