Story
Every year, drowning claims 236,000 lives worldwide - many of them children who simply never learned to swim. That's a statistic that hits different when you're obsessed with being in the water. Which is exactly why we're about to do something completely mental to support SwimTayka, a charity teaching life-saving swimming skills to communities that need them most.
About 10 years ago, after a few too many drinks and professing our love for swimming, we made a wild pact to swim the English Channel. You know how these things go - seemed brilliant at 2am, questionable by morning coffee. Fast forward to today, and apparently we're the kind of people who actually follow through on tipsy promises, because here we are, signed up to swim in June 2026!
And just to make it even more interesting (because why make things easy?), we can't swim in wetsuits – we'll be battling the elements in nothing but our swimsuits. In water that's basically a cold bath. In June.
**Why SwimTayka Matters?**
SwimTayka operates in disadvantaged communities worldwide, providing access to qualified swimming teachers who do far more than just teach strokes. They're teaching a life skill that can literally mean the difference between life and death. These teachers create a ripple effect - today's students become tomorrow's instructors, building swimming communities that last generations.
Here's what your donation actually does:
- £25 provides basic water safety training for 5 children
- £50 funds swimming lessons for 1 child for a full term
- £100 trains a local community member to become a swimming instructor
- £250 provides essential safety equipment for a swimming program
So while we're having our mid-life crisis in the English Channel, your money is doing something genuinely meaningful.
The Challenge
Swimming the English Channel is no small feat, and frankly, researching it has made me question our life choices. The waters are cold (around 15-18°C - yes, really), the currents are strong, and it's one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Swimmers often encounter jellyfish (the stingy kind), seaweed (the grabby kind), and even curious seals (actually quite nice, but startling at 3am).
Hypothermia is a real risk, and the mental challenge of swimming in the dark can be genuinely daunting. It's like a real-life horror movie, but with more splashing and significantly less chance of being rescued by the credits.
There are six of us in the relay team, and we'll be taking turns to swim one hour at a time, rotating until we reach the French coast. This means each of us will swim multiple times, battling the cold, the waves, and the gradual realisation that we could have just donated money like normal people. We'll be cheering each other on from the support boat, but once you're in the water, it's just you, the Channel, and whatever's lurking beneath.
The Ask (Please Help Us Help Others)
As a team, we're aiming to raise £10,000 for SwimTayka - enough to fund comprehensive swimming programs for multiple communities. That's a lot of money, but spread across everyone who thinks our Channel adventure is either inspiring or hilariously misguided, it's totally achievable.
Whether it's £5 or £500, every donation brings us closer to our goal and brings life-saving swimming skills to children who need them most. Plus, you'll get regular updates on our training progress, which will either be inspiring or provide excellent entertainment.
We'll be swimming with jellyfish, braving temperatures that would make a penguin shiver, and probably questioning our sanity somewhere around hour 8.

Thank you for supporting SwimTayka and our Channel adventure. Together, we're proving that sometimes the best decisions are made after a few drinks and a wild conversation about life goals...
