Story
Gillian, Mandy, Patty, Sarah, Nikki and now Cathy, are walking the 24 miles of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, hoping to raise funds for WeSwim, a charity who are increasing the opportunities for people with disabilities to swim in London. Their volunteer run clubs empower adults with disabilities to stay active, connect with others, and build lasting confidence.
Says Gillian 'I have been volunteering for WeSwim at Vauxhall Leisure Centre since January last year, and it is the most joyful part of the week. People with disabilities come to swim or paddle about in a safe and secure environment and volunteers help them to do that. We do it mostly 1:1, and personally I love teaching people to swim or improve their stroke. The positive impact on someone of learning to swim for the first time, or learning how to breathe on breastroke so their back doesn't hurt any more has to be seen to be believed. And we lucky volunteers get to experience this every week.'
WeSwim is a lifeline for people with disabilities who really struggle to get active through typical leisure provision. 1 in 6 Londoners has a disability and WeSwim have a waiting list of over 120 people. This year, they are planning to open more clubs to get more people with disabilities into the water. It costs £10,000 to run each club for 6 months.
How your donations can help:
£5 could cover the costs of refreshments for our swimmers
£20 could cover the costs one volunteer’s DBS checks to get them started
£40 could cover the cost of an entire swim for person with disabilities
