Story
I am Martin Higgins, known as Higgy, a Royal Air Force pilot and former Red Arrow. In 2003, a routine eye check at a local optician unveiled that I had glaucoma, a silent menace to my sight. I am one of the lucky ones because that eye check saved my sight.
Over 700,000 people in the UK are affected by glaucoma but half of them are unaware of their condition. The mission is clear: to end preventable glaucoma sight loss.
In support of Glaucoma UK, I am embarking on an extraordinary journey, running from Lands End to John O’Groats over 35 days as part of Run Britannia®. Covering just over 1,000 miles, I promise you that I will earn every penny of your kind donations. It will take 18 months of training to get to the start line in June 2024. It has been a journey of long mileage, strength training, and learning how to eat and drink on the go. I mean a LOT of food!
Glaucoma research is seriously underfunded. With funding, clever scientists could improve diagnosis methods, find better treatments, or even discover a cure. I have set an ambitious target of £50,000, exclusively directed towards Glaucoma UK’s Pitts Crick Fellowship Appeal. This life-changing research could ensure a future where glaucoma no longer robs individuals of the invaluable gift of sight.
Together, let's create a future where no one has to face the darkness of preventable glaucoma sight loss. Your support today can make all the difference.
