Attempting to swim Burntisland to Granton a distance of 11-15km · 19 June 2025

Story

My son Lewis received a kidney transplant from my wife, Gillian, back in 2018. We were fortunate — we had the time and resources to relocate to Cambridge and stay near Addenbrooke’s Hospital for a month. That gave the operation the best possible chance of success.

Thankfully, it went well — and Lewis is now fit and well.

But not everyone is as lucky. The Transplant Patients Trust is a small charity that steps in to help those who aren’t in that position. They provide one-off grants of £375 to help cover basic but critical costs: things like replacing a fridge so medication can be stored properly, transport and accommodation near the hospital, even clothing for recovery.

This support can make a real difference — not just to patients, but to families holding everything together.

So... here’s the fundraising plan

I'm attempting the Burntisland to Granton swim — with a twist. The coastguard has kindly added a “dog-leg” to the route to get me across the shipping channel as quickly as possible.

Depending on the tides and the currents, it’ll be anywhere from 11km to... however long it takes me to land. I’ll start on an outgoing tide, swimming away from where I want to go — toward Inchkeith Island — then hopefully with the tide change swim across to Granton. That’s the plan, anyway, estimating 4- 5 hours.

Lets not even think about, the weather, the waves, currents or the jellyfish especially the jellyfish

I’ve chosen this challenge because it’s well outside my comfort zone. I believe it’s good to do something that scares you — and for the record, I am absolutely terrified.

On the plus side, I’ve always wanted to visit Norway... just not quite like this.

So if you can spare a donation — no refunds, mind! — it would be a great help to the families the Transplant Patients Trust supports.
