Story
Thank you for taking time to visit our Just Giving page. So, the short story...In January 2021, I (Grace) was diagnosed with bowel cancer, following emergency surgery to remove my appendix and part of my bowel leaving me with Barry* (my stoma). This was followed by a further surgery in August 2021, where to minimize the risk of the cancer returning, i had the remaining part of my large intestine removed and in turn making Barry permanent.
*naming my stoma left a good way to talk about it. A stoma is a daunting change to your body and a lot to process, not only for me but for the people around me. De-medicalising my stoma helped me breakdown some barriers and come to terms with it!
The Challenge:
Beginning in the town of Llanberis, the challenge will see us trek to the top of Snowdon...at night! This will entail a trek of 8 hours, covering 21km of undulating terrain in the dark. Mum (Jo) is also coming along...which will be a challenge in itself (joking!)
The Charity:
Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK and the second biggest cancer killer. There are lots of upsetting facts and stats about bowel cancer but the most important thing to note is that bowel cancer is treatable and curable, especially if diagnosed early.
Bowel Cancer UK is the UKs leading bowel cancer charity. They fund targeted research, provide expert information and support to patients and their families, educate the public and professionals about the disease and campaign for early diagnosis and access to best treatment and care.
