Story
In April, my Mum and I are running the incredible London Marathon for Sibling Support in memory of my beautiful big sister, Laura, who died May 2023, aged 23 ❤️
I was 16 when Laura was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, and 21 when she died. Those years were meant to be about growing up, and instead I was helping care for my sister and then having to go through the agony watching her die, whilst I tried to finish my final year of uni.
My parents were offered support, and rightly so, but as her sibling - and especially at that in-between age - I was offered nothing.
Sibling grief is so often overlooked, yet it shapes literally the entirety of your life.
That’s why I care so much about Sibling Support. They are the only charity in the UK dedicated to young people who have had a brother or sister die. They provide free resources, support and days out for siblings of all ages, helping young people feel less alone, and aiming to prevent the detrimental long-term impact that ignored grief can bring.
It’s something I wish had been there for me, and I hope it’s something Laura would be proud of.
In October, my Mum and I also ran the Chicago Marathon (it wasn't fast, but we got round!) I received my place for both London and Chicago before being diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (dodgy joints that don’t like to stay in their sockets!) - so this won’t be a fast run, more of a determined shuffle around London. But I’ll get through it for Laura and for every sibling who deserves to be supported.
Sibling Support is 100% reliant on donations, so every donation, no matter the size, helps them to continue their incredible work.
Thank you so much x
