Climbing Ben Nevis for Help for Heroes
On 6th June, my brother David, our friend Alex, and I will be attempting to climb Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, to raise money for Help for Heroes.
For me, this challenge is about supporting a community that has been a big part of my life.
I served in the Army Reserves for around 13 years. I was fortunate enough to serve as part of the pipe band, and I’ve always felt that while I wore the uniform, many others were the real heroes – the men and women who deployed, served on operations, and carried the weight of that responsibility.
Today, I continue to work closely with the military community. I’m involved with the Army Cadet Force, helping young people develop their confidence, leadership and skills. I also work in a school for the children of serving personnel, and I’m involved with the Combined Cadet Force (CCF).
Because of this, I see first-hand the impact that military life can have on both serving personnel and their families. Behind every uniform is a family, and behind many children in our schools is a parent who has served, deployed, or sacrificed a great deal.
That’s why Help for Heroes is such an important charity. They provide support for veterans and their families when they need it most.
Why this is a challenge
I’ll be honest – I’m not currently in the best shape, which means climbing Ben Nevis will be a real challenge for me. That’s part of the reason for doing it. It will take preparation, determination and a lot of effort to reach the summit.
But compared to the challenges faced by many veterans, it’s a small thing to do.
How you can help
If you’re able to donate, even a small amount, it would mean a great deal.
Every donation helps Help for Heroes continue supporting veterans and their families, providing recovery, wellbeing and practical support to those who have served.
Thank you for your support.
Graeme
