Supporting The Sunrise Centre Fund will help us to provide additional equipment, enhance our environments and provide additional training for our staff all to provide the very best care that we can for our patients in Cornwall.

Story

Thank you for considering sponsoring our relay swim from Lands’ End to the Scilly Isles on Saturday 2/8/25. We are raising money for the Sunrise Centre, the cancer centre at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, which has multiple personal connections and importance to the members of the team.

This is a late request, but we have been holding off opening a page awaiting the long-term weather forecast which is now looking increasing favourable during our tight time window dictated by the neap tides. We are swimming on a neap tide to keep the strength of currents to a minimum as they both aid and abet us on our journey over.

We are relay team of 4 swimmers accompanied ably by a team of 3 on the Andiamo, our support boat. We anticipate it will take between 16-20 hours to complete the swim of 30-34 miles.

We are long-term keen sea swimmers, regularly swimming together off the Cornish coast and we are part of a larger swim group based at St Agnes surf club. However, this is our first attempt at an offshore swim relay crossing for both the swimmers and boat crew.

Adam, is our responsible officer and dreamed up this plan, Paul is health and safety, Graham is our quartermaster, and Gavin is the first aider. Captain Sam is in charge of the boat crew assisted by Richard and Robert the cabin boy.

For those who want to celebrate with us our successful crossing we aim to be in the Mermaid Inn on Saturday evening. The Sunrise Centre at Royal Cornwall Hospital is home to the Radiotherapy Service and Oncology Services. Our dedicated and highly skilled team care for patients receiving cancer treatment in Cornwall.

Everyone in the Sunrise Centre wants patients to receive the very best care, at what can be a very difficult time for them and those closest to them. The Sunrise Centre /Clinical Oncology Fund allows us to go beyond what NHS funding alone can provide.

With your support, we can:

- Enhance the physical environment to create a feeling of calm.

- Purchase advanced equipment.

- Facilitate staff training that goes above and beyond the statutory provision.

- We also buy things such as child support packs for children of different ages whose parents are undergoing cancer treatment

Donations to our charitable fund are used carefully for the ultimate benefit of patient care.

Thank you for your generosity.
