Mini and Junior Great North Run · 7 September 2024 ·

10,500 people in the UK have ataxia which is a progressive neurological condition that disrupts the messages sent from our brains to our muscles that are used to move, speak, listen and see. Ataxia UK funds research into finding treatments and a cure and provide support until they are found.

Story

My son Thomas has a rare condition called Friedreichs Ataxia. This is a degenerative neurological condition which effects his movement and motor skills.

During lockdown, Thomas walked a mile a day for the whole of February raising £8000 for Ataxia UK. Since then, his mobility has declined and he is now in a wheelchair the majority of the time.

So now it's time for a different challenge.

On 7th September, Thomas will 'wheel' the 4km Jr Great North Run in his wheelchair (with me, his very unfit mother, trotting beside him).

Thomas is aiming to raise more vital funds for Ataxia UK who do groundbreaking work with Ataxia research (there is currently no cure) and supporting people suffering with these conditions.
