Story

What are we doing?

Over the entire first week of term, working in pairs our athletes will be taking turns on the rowing machine at the Cloisters on campus. From the 20th to the 27th of September, our members will be rowing non-stop 24 hours a day to raise as much money as we can for our Club! We've been blown away by the support we've received in recent years for similar events and hope to keep living up to the challenge.

We invite anyone and everyone to stop by the Gilbert Scott building on the UofG Campus and meet our members, and ask about their experiences with the Club and our community.

Who are we?

Established in 1867, Glasgow University Boat Club (GUBC) is one of the oldest and most successful clubs in the university. We are also one of the largest!

GUBC competes all across the country, from our local River Clyde to Henley-On-Thames. In the last year, we have had many great successes, in particular, our top Women's 8 winning the Challenge Pennant at WEHORR, as well as multiple current and alumni members of the Club competing in national squads.

What are we trying to fundraise for?

2025 has been a tough year for our Club, in January GUBC lost its home: the GU Boathouse on the River Clyde. Despite this loss, the Club persevered. With the determination of members and unwavering support from the coaching team, the Club managed to have another successful year on and off the water.

Thanks to the generosity of past donors we have been able to afford some top boats for the upper end of the squad, however, the cost to purchase such vital equipment is still high. This year, we are aiming to raise £7500 to put towards a new 8-person racing boat. Hitting this target would go towards providing a great shell for our crews to use for racing next season.

Although we plan to use these donations to benefit the Club, we also plan to donate 20% of all proceeds to the Scottish Huntington's Association, who work tirelessly to ensure that everyone impacted by Huntington’s disease in Scotland has access to the specialist care and support they need when they need it, regardless of where they live. Registered Charity No: 010985

We would also like to assign some of the funds raised to a 'Henley & Regatta fund'. This money will help our athletes pay the ever-increasing cost of racing. As a club, we want to ensure that money is never a barrier to racing, making it easier for the Club's program to continue to grow. So we will be aiming to raise money that will reduce the cost of summer racing and hopefully allow us to send more crew athletes to events like Henley Royal Regatta and Henley Women's Regatta.
