Hackney half for DKMS

Polly King is raising money for DKMS
In memory of Syd

Hackney Half Marathon 2025 · 18 May 2025 ·

Someone is diagnosed with blood cancer in the UK every 20 minutes, and many will need a blood stem cell transplant for a second chance at life. We are committed to increasing the number of potential blood stem cell donors in the UK, so that there is a donor for everyone who needs one.

Story

Ruby, Scarlett, Jess, Flora and Kenzi are running for a cause that's incredibly close to our friend Polly's heart-DKMS, the stem cell charity.

Back in 2020, Polly signed up to the DKMS register, and just two weeks later, she was matched with someone in urgent need of a transplant. She donated her stem cells in January 2021 to a stranger she couldn't contact-all she knew was his age and gender.

In 2023, he became ill again, and she donated for a second time. Then, in summer 2024, she had the privilege of meeting Syd (her stem cell recipient), and his partner, Dory.

Syd sadly passed away in 2024 but because of her donation, Syd got three more years. He met his granddaughter, made precious memories, and had time with his family-time he never would ve had otherwise. Syd has since passed away, but those extra years mattered deeply.

Right now, less than 3% of the UK is on the stem cell register, and one in three patients never find the match they need. It takes just two minutes to sign up from home-and for many, it's their only chance of a cure.

We're running to raise money and awareness for

DKMS. Please consider joining the register and donate via the link in our bio.
