About the Hub at Westhoughton

Westhoughton Vision took responsibility for the building in 2017, and went on to form the The Hub at Westhoughton. With the support of the local councillors, Bolton Council and community volunteers. The Hub has blossomed into an amazing space for Westhoughton residents. The aim was to save the building, provide a vibrant and useful space for activities and to be inclusive. With this is mind, we aim our events and activities at different age groups and in different areas.

As part of the goal to be fully inclusive, The Hub needs to enhance its sensory provision both indoors and outdoors and this is where this fundraising comes in.

Why is sensory play important?

Sensory play plays an important role in a child’s learning and development. Much of our learning comes through our ability to use our senses to retain information. Sensory play is a lot of fun. It also offers many benefits for child development, including:

Helping children understand how their actions affect what’s around them.

Supporting brain development, enhancing memory, complex tasks and problem solving.

Developing fine motor skills through tactile play (useful when children want to hold a pen or use scissors for example).

Supporting language development, communication and social skills.

Enhancing memory and observational skills.

Encouraging creative and independent thinking.

Emotional regulation by providing a calming effect on children’s angry or anxious feelings.

How does Fledglings and Contact fit in?

Fledglings is the not-for-profit shop part of the national charity, Contact.

Fledglings supplies products and equipment that help children and adults with additional needs with everyday challenges. Having been around for 25 years it is a trusted source of products and information.

As it is also a charity, although we are NOT raising money directly for them, we decided that this Halloween we would support The Hub in helping them get the equipment they need whilst at the same time helping another charity by choosing them to supply it.

This way we know that every penny raised is going to a charity even within the supply chain.
