Story
As people may know, I lost my sister on 16th October 2025 at Sue Ryder in Leckhampton.
After six tough months of being poorly, with many hospital stays, Claire came home on 10th October for palliative care. We were hopeful she would be able to stay at home and we'd have more time to enjoy together, but unfortunately it wasn't to be.
Thankfully, a bed became available at Sue Ryder and they got her settled in straight away. All of the staff were incredible and so caring. They made sure Claire was comfortable and pain free, and treated her so personally.
Claire was at Sue Ryder for less than 24 hours before she passed away, but being there meant her death was peaceful, surrounded by family, friends, and her dog Jaz.
After she died, the staff continued to treat us with so much compassion. We were given all the time and space we needed, and they still treated Claire with love - from placing a lavender cushion on her pillow, to opening the window and hanging a butterfly on her door. They even painted her nails as we told them it was always important to her to have them done.
Losing Claire at just 37 has been truly devastating, but my family and I take so much comfort in the care shown to her in her final day. What Sue Ryder provides is incredible, and their amazing staff make the most painful experiences that little bit easier.
I am running this half marathon in memory of Claire, and to say thank you to Sue Ryder for the care they gave her and our family. Hospices across the UK are really struggling financially right now, and I'd love to do a little bit to help Sue Ryder keep providing the amazing care they give to families when they need it most ❤️
