More About Home Start Epsom, Ewell and Banstead

Parenting can be lonely, overwhelming and harder still for families navigating poverty, disability, language barriers, or suffering abuse. These additional challenges can have a detrimental impact on children’s early development and life outcomes. Considerable evidence supports the positive impact of early years interventions, like that delivered by Home Start (HSEEB).

Home Start support for vulnerable families is based on a theory of change which suggests that:

- The well-being /mental health of parents is improved in families provided with social support

- This leads to increased feelings of parental self-competence.

- As a result, parental behaviour becomes more adaptive, child behaviour improves, and the children’s projected future outcomes are improved.

- Thus Home-Start support is a preventative and protective factor for young people in the UK, reducing the likelihood of them developing mental health or addiction issues.

For almost 30 years, they have helped parents build the confidence and skills needed to achieve positive outcomes for their children. Their early intervention services include:

1. Drop-In Perinatal Groups: Nurture groups for pregnant parents and new parents who are experiencing extra challenges and are seeking support.

2. Provide vital 1:1 support at home: Dedicated staff and volunteers provide 1:1 support for families who are not suitable or able to attend group sessions. These parents may be facing difficulties such as isolation, bereavement, postnatal depression, illness, disability, domestic violence, relationship breakdown and other life changing events.

3. Matching families with dedicated volunteers: The volunteer visits weekly for 2-3 hours offering practical and emotional support, informal parenting advice, and support in accessing local services.

4. Support for parents of over 5’s and SEND children: Through 1:1 support, group work and parenting courses, they provide a crucial life line for local families facing additional challenges. They are the only voluntary organisation in Epsom, Ewell and Banstead providing family intervention services to under 5s.

5. Positive Parenting Groups / Courses to break negative cycles: Expanding programme of group work supports parents to learn about parenting, healthy eating and positive lifestyles.

6. Dad Matters: New groups supporting Fathers
