Story
I’m taking on the Arctic Challenge in Sweden to raise money for the National Literacy Trust – because no child’s future should be defined by poor literacy.
Books and reading have opened so many doors in my own life and I can’t imagine growing up without that chance. Sadly, thousands of children in the UK don’t have the same opportunity. On average, children from the poorest backgrounds start school 19 months behind their peers, and without literacy skills, their futures are at risk:
5 times more likely to fall behind in English at age 11
4 times more likely to be unemployed at 34
3 times more likely to face mental health problems as adults
That’s why I’ve signed up for the Arctic Challenge, an extreme test of endurance in Kiruna's frozen wilderness, including dog sledding, ice fishing and long treks in sub-zero temperatures. It will be a huge challenge for me personally, but worth every step if it helps to change a child’s story.
I’m covering the cost of my flights and travel myself, so your support will help make a real difference through the work of the National Literacy Trust.
Here’s how your donation could make a difference:
• Give a child their very first books of their own, sparking a lifelong love of reading.
• Open doors for a teenager by providing skills and opportunities that prepare them for work.
• Support families to build their literacy together, breaking the cycle of disadvantage for future generations.
Alongside the Arctic Challenge, I'll also be taking on other fundraising activities - starting with an Ice Bucket Challenge (in case Sweden isn't cold enough!) on the 9th September, and I'll be posting updates here as the journey continues.
Every donation, big or small, helps to change lives and I’ll be carrying your support with me every step of the way in the Arctic.
Thank you so much for being part of this journey!
