Hannah Mitchell - London Marathon for Spinal Research

London Marathon 2026 · 26 April 2026 · Start fundraising for this event
For several years, I've toyed with the idea of running a marathon, always promising myself that I'd do it someday. This year, a series of events made me realise just how privileged I am to have the ability and opportunity to take on such challenges. This has encouraged me to finally take that step forward. My mum completed a half marathon just before her accident, so it felt only right to keep going for her.
On the 26th April I got a call that shook my entire families lives. My mum was involved in a horrific motorbike accident and has been left paralysed from the chest down. My mum was all about adventure. She hiked, ran, and explored all of the world. With all her strength and resilience, she still hopes to again one day.
Her case has been diagnosed as ASIA A and due to a severed cord and severe levels of fracture displacement, we have been told to prepare that she is highly unlikely to walk again. However, I can never give up the hope that one day she might be able to put one foot infront of the other.
There are so many parts of her children's lives that she is yet to experience, her near death experience has made this all very real. She is the strongest and most inspirational woman I know. We have explored all avenues of treatment for Spinal Cord Injuries and the reality is that there is still so much more research and development in this field and it would be an honour to support and fundraise for this amazing charity in the hope that one day miracles could happen.
So for now Ma, while you continue on getting stronger, I’ll keep up the KM’s for the both of us.
As a family we have already been overwhelmed with the support from people. Unfortunately, spinal injuries have long lasting effects on peoples lives that mean I will continue raising awareness and fundraising for the research that could be life changing.
All I can ask is that you could please share this story in the hope that one day things might look a little different.
