Story
Today I completed my first sprint triathlon in memory of my incredible dad, Philip Roderick.
Dad passed away earlier this week. I’d signed up and trained for the triathlon as a fundraising effort, having witnessed my parents struggling through the toughest challenges this year, and since his diagnosis almost 10 years ago. However, dad’s sudden passing meant that today, I raced in his memory and know he was there with me every step of the way.
The thing about Parkinson’s is that it’s degenerative, so despite anyone’s best efforts, it’s one-directional. And the other thing is that it’s wildly under-researched and under-funded, so although there are treatments available to minimise symptoms, we’re a long way from a cure. Dad was passionate about getting back to running. From their patio, he looked up every day to a view of the South Downs and the walks and running routes he desperately wanted to return to and that he loved so much.
It was heart-breaking to know that he’d never be able to manage those steep climbs again but he didn't give up hope, and he was so encouraging of me getting into running and supporting my race.
Parkinson’s is becoming increasingly common. Imagine if one day we found a cure so it's not so devastating to individuals and their families.
Help me honour my dad’s memory by donating to Cure Parkinson’s.
Thank you so much,
Hannah
