The Happy Hippy Campus Hike

John Hirst is raising money for Alzheimer's Research UK
In memory of Patricia Hirst

70 mile hike from Newcastle upon Tyne to Norton-on-Tees · 22 May 2026

Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity. We’re striving for a cure, by revolutionising the way we treat, diagnose and prevent dementia.

Story

Firstly a quick explanation for the page title. The hike is due to finish at the Happy Hippy Shake Tea Dance organised by the LiveWell Hub in Stockton 70 miles down the road from The Campus for Ageing & Vitality. In many dementia patients there is a significant reduction in the size of the part of the brain called the hippocampus. The aim of Alzheimer's Research UK is to work FOR A CURE. A healthy (happy) hippocampus will go a long way to achieving this.

My wife was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia in 2012 aged 61 and died 5 years later. I'm undertaking this hike to raise awareness of early onset dementia as well as raising funds for research into this form of dementia that currently has no treatment.

Every 3 minutes dementia steals a happily ever after. Research is our only chance of changing the ending for people affected by dementia.

Alzheimer's Research UK are this country's leading dementia research charity. They exist for a cure.

Your donation helps our scientists and researchers find new ways to diagnose dementia, develop new treatments and find a cure for dementia.
