Story
Last year, we tackled the 5 peaks challenge and raised over £4,051 for Growing Well. This year, we are excited to take on the Fairfield Horseshoe on 6 September 2025, and hope to elevate both our challenge and the vital funds we raise. The Fairfield Horseshoe is one of the Lake District’s most celebrated circular mountain routes. This classic trail forms an elegant horseshoe-shaped ridge around the Fairfield massif, offering an unforgettable day in the high fells.
Towering above Ambleside, the route boasts breathtaking panoramic views—over the Rydal Valley, towards the mighty Helvellyn range and on a clear day, as far as Morecambe Bay. Along the way, we’ll tick off 8 x Wainwright summits in a single outing, including the high point of Fairfield itself at 873 metres (2,864 feet). It’s a true adventure steeped in history; Alfred Wainwright’s guidebooks made this route legendary.
We’ll take the anti-clockwise route, widely regarded as the most scenic and rewarding way to experience the horseshoe. Starting from the vibrant village of Ambleside—with its cafés, shops and handy parking—the walk begins with a steady climb to Low Pike (508m). From there, we traverse the ridge to High Pike, Dove Crag, Hart Crag and onwards to Fairfield’s summit. The return journey follows the graceful southern ridge over Great Rigg and Heron Pike before descending via Nab Scar.
As you walk this beautiful path filled with ancient packhorse routes and airy ridges that have stood for centuries, remember that every step you take supports Growing Well. We aim to raise £200 for this incredible cause that helps individuals improve their mental health through gardening and nature-based activities. Join us in making a difference—your support can transform lives! Together we can create lasting change.
