The Great Knaresborough Bed Race is an annual charity event where teams race decorated beds through a 2.4 mile course that includes a swim in the River Nidd. The race began in 1966 where actual hospital beds were used and has become an annual tradition. It is a completely unique event with a fancy-dress pageant parade, following with a 2.4 mile gruelling race and swim.

Attracting approximately 30,000 spectators a year, it is a joyous family event and officers from Harrogate Outer Neighbourhood Team are honoured to be representing North Yorkshire Police at this amazing community event.

We will be running the event in memory of our colleague PC 949 Rosie PRIOR who was tragically killed during a road traffic collision earlier this year on 11th January. Rosie stopped to help a driver on the A19 whilst off duty when they were both struck by a lorry and killed. We will proudly wear her collar number on our running vests. As a team we have decided to support The Police Children’s Charity which was also nominated by Rosie’s family.

The Police Children’s Charity is a registered Charity which aims to support Police families by helping to ease the financial pressures of bringing up children in the face of life-changing circumstances. These circumstances could involve the death of the Police Donor Parent or their partner, or where the Police Donor takes early medical retirement. This applies to both on and off duty incidents or issues.

The Charity also provides financial assistance to support the mental health and wellbeing of the children of Serving Police Donors.

The Police put their lives on the line every day to keep our neighbourhoods and communities safe and free from crime. While no amount of money can replace a Parent, support from the Charity can provide a degree of financial certainty in difficult times.
