What we are doing:

On the 13th May 2023, I will be running 70 kilometres/44 miles, twice the distance of the channel crossing, with over 4500m elevation across the mountains of Eryri to raise funds for Charitable Roots, a charity which provides necessary services for refugees in Dunkirk. I hope to raise funds for this amazing charity and to promote awareness of the refugee situation happening across the English Channel.

About ForRefugees:

ForRefugees provide small-scale grants to local partners and grassroot NGOs on the ground in Europe. They will distribute all the raised funds for the chosen NGO, Charitable Roots.

Roots is a French association working in Grande-Synthe, an area of northern France close to Dunkirk, providing critical services to people living in the informal camp located there. The essential support they provide include access to drinking water, hot showers, information and charging, hygiene and camp maintenance and occasionally a barber's shop. None of these services are provided by the state, Roots aims to provide these basic necessities every single day of the year.

About the Grande-Synthe camp:

The Grand-Synthe camp is an informal refugee camp located directly on the border between France and the United Kingdom, there are thousands of people displaced with the intention of crossing the channel to obtain asylum in the United Kingdom and find a home within a safe environment. People like you and me, families, unaccompanied minors from countries like Sudan, Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Iraq, Eritrea, countries where there is currently armed conflict, persecution for ideology, gender, and where conditions of basic human rights are often not met.

No one would put their own life at risk, nor that of their children, if it were not for this imperative necessity.

Fundamental human rights are violated on a daily basis in the Grand-Synthe camp, thousands of people on the move, including families and children, are crowded into camping tents with minimal provisions. The camp is subject to regular evictions and deconstruction by the state, the camps are destroyed, people's belongings are taken from them, including their huts and tents, and the land is towed away to prevent it from being rebuilt. There is no access to running water, the closest water point being over 3.5km from the camp. Basic hygiene has become a challenge, depending entirely on the few grassroots NGOs operating in the area to fill the gap left by the French and English governments.

Target Amount: £500

With the £500 we will be able to provide drinking water to the displaced people for a month, with all aid having a direct impact on the displaced people in the Grand-Synthe refugee camp.

100% of the donations received will go directly to the NGO Roots.

Trail Running Workshop - May 7th 2023

A day to look at all the knowledge required to be a successful mountain runner, what kit to take, ascent and descent strategies, training and improvement, technical terrain, all as part of a grand day running out in the Welsh mountains of Eryri.

Què estem fent?

El 13 de maig de 2023, correré 70 quilòmetres/44 milles, el doble de la distància del pas del canal de la mànega, amb més de 4500 metres d'altitud a través de les muntanyes d'Eryri (Snowdonia, Wales, UK) per recaptar fons per a l’ONG Roots, una organització benèfica de base que proporciona serveis fundamentals com l'accés a aigua potable, dutxes calentes, informació, inclusió digital, higiene i manteniment de campaments i, a vegades, una barberia. Cap d'aquests serveis és prestat per l'Estat, Roots té com a objectiu proporcionar aquestes necessitats bàsiques cada dia de l'any. Esperem recaptar fons per a aquesta increïble associació i per a promoure la conscienciació sobre la situació dels refugiats que està ocorrent en el canal de la mànega.

Sobre Roots:

Roots proporciona al voltant de 7.000L-11.000L d’aigua diaris per al campament. Durant 2022 van proporcionar més de 2 millons de litres.Tot això suposa un repte, els costos diaris son elevats, per exemple, només per proporcionar aigua potable hi ha un cost mínim de combustible de 20€ diaris a afegir el manteniment de vehicles i costos logístics. Els vehicles carreguen amb 1 tonelada d’agua i bombes d’aigua i cada dia fan més de 7 trajectes del camp a la font d’aigua, les incidències son el pa de cada dia.

Sobre Grande-Synthe:

El camp Grand-Synthe és un camp de refugiats informal situat directament a la frontera entre França i el Regne Unit, hi ha milers de persones desplaçades amb l’intenció de creuar el canal per obtenir asil al Regne Unit i formar una llar en un entorn segur. Estem parlant de persones com tu i com jo, families, menors no acompanyats de països com Sudan, Yemen, Afganistan, Iran, Irak, Eritrea,…països on actualment hi ha conflicte armat, persecució per ideologia, gènere i sovint no es compleixen els drets humans bàsics.

Ningú posaria la seva vida en risc, ni la dels seus fills, si no fos per imperativa necessitat.

Drets humans fonamentals són violats diàriament al camp, milers de persones en moviment, incloses famílies i nens, s'allotgen en tendes de campanya amb disposicions mínimes. El campament està subjecte a desnonaments regulars per part de l'Estat, els camps són destruïts, els prenen les pertinences de les persones, incloses les bosses i tendes de campanya, i el sòl remolcat per evitar que es reconstrueixi res. No hi ha accés a l’ aigua corrent, l'aigua potable no és una opció sense caminar més de 3,5km. Fins i tot, la higiene bàsica es converteix en un repte, depenent totalment de les poques ONG de base que operen en la zona per a cubrir el buit que el govern françès i anglès ha deixat.

Objectiu de la recaudació: 500£

Amb els 500£ podrem proporcionar aigua potable a les persones desplaçades durant un mes, tota ajuda tindrà un impacte directe a les persones desplaçades en el camp de refugiats de Grand-synthe.

El 100% de les donacions rebudes aniran directament a l’ONG Roots.
