European Bike Ride · 12 March 2025

We are building Europe’s first rainforest research station, dedicated to the study of ancient Atlantic temperate rainforests. We'll find answers to restoring the balance of our native woodlands and deepen our understanding of how these ecosystems can survive and thrive for generations to come.

Story

The Challenge:

Starting at the port of Brindisi my mate Theo and I plan on cycle touring back to our homes in liphook, Hampshire. While the route has changed a few times, the general goal is to cover at least 2,700 kilometers over the course of about 45 days. along the way we'll pass through six countries, experience all kinds of weather, hopefully meeting some interesting people, and camping in some probably pretty dodgy places.

Its gonna be a good one!

The Charity:

The Thousand Year Trust is a charity dedicated to restoring temperate rainforests in the UK. Their mission is to triple the amount of temperate rainforest across Britain over the next thirty years.

Historically, up to 20% of the British Isles was covered by temperate rainforests, but now less than 1% remains.

Their founding initiative, the Thousand Year Project, focuses on expanding the temperate rainforest in the Cabilla wood on Bodmin Moor. The goal is to triple the existing 100-acre forest and reintroduce native species, including pine martens.

Through these efforts, the Thousand Year Trust seeks to protect, preserve, and expand temperate rainforests, contributing to biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation.
