Carl Harwin is raising money for Big C

adidas Manchester Marathon 2026 · 19 April 2026 ·

Big C, established in Norfolk in 1980, is your local cancer charity. Through our support, research, equipment and education, we make a difference to the lives of local people affected by cancer. Big C has four cancer support centres across Norfolk and we also provide support by telephone and online.

Story

Why the f**k would you want to run a marathon? The marathon is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to me, a sacrifice to them, & a sacrifice to be better. The marathon is a perfect metaphor for life - because you get out what you put in.

My chosen charity is The Big C, established in Norfolk in 1980. Through support, research, equipment and education, they make a difference to the lives of local people affected by cancer. They are there to help support both families and individuals every step of the way in their fight to beat cancer which, unfortunately impacts so many of our lives in one way or another - with 4 in 10 people living in the UK with this horrible condition.

The Big C is also close to our family’s heart, as both my late grandparents supported the charity through its infancy during the 1980s, organising charitable fundraisers and events.

As I embark on running my 1st Marathon on the 19th April at Manchester, I set a challenging target of completing the sacred 26.2 mile dance between 03:00-03:15hrs. During my training, I have so far clocked over 1,250km & 100hrs (& counting). I have learnt that running doesn’t just test your legs it tests your mind. I have encountered pain - both mentally & physically, I have been resilient, determined, making sacrifices and compromises, ready to arrive at the start line at my peak level, all whilst trying to be a present dad and husband, which at times can feel like I am failing at it all. Those diagnosed with cancer endure these battles and challenges every single minute of every day. Their courageousness and bravery in the face of adversity inspires me. Therefore, it’s an honour to fundraise for this worthwhile cause, whilst continuing my grandparents labour and achieving a personal ambition.

Your donations and support are gratefully received as I target £10 for every Kilometre ran, with an overall target of £425.00.

“I started taking my dreams more seriously, when someone told me…. Its not one more day, its one less…”. Chase your goals, do hard things, do not take your health for granted, be kind and show up every day & (apparently) never trust a fart after mile 16….LETS GO!
