Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

This year, I will be running the Norfolk Marathon in April and wanted to spread awareness and raise support for HASAG, a charity that provides help and support for people with asbestos-related diseases. Asbestos is a toxic and carcinogenic material that was previously used in old building materials. Even to this day, thousands of people are affected by asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma.

This charity also speaks to me on a very personal level. In September 2024, my uncle unfortunately suffered health complications caused by mesothelioma. He suffered a stroke and spent 3 months in hospital where he was told the disease was terminal with no cure and, for him, no effective treatment. I witnessed the devastating toll it took not only on him but also on my aunty and the rest of the family. My uncle, however, stayed strong throughout it all. Despite the loss of his speech, the ability to swallow and the extreme pain he suffered, he continued fighting to get better. He did so well that he was able to walk again and talk a little before being released from the hospital and, through sheer hard work and determination, regained his ability to swallow and therefore eat normally again. Unfortunately, he tragically passed away in June 2025 at the age of just 60.

It was inspiring seeing the strength my uncle displayed even in his lowest moments. I am therefore running the marathon partly as a physical challenge but also to honour my uncle's memory; and by raising donations and awareness for HASAG, we can provide support for many other people and their families affected by asbestos each year
