Story
Hi my name is Hasnat Hakim, and I am a medical student at St. George’s.
During my studies I have witnessed the struggles and complications associated with childbirth, even with the facilities and healthcare opportunities provided by the NHS.
This is what inspired me to apply to Maa - they provide essential education and health checks for expecting mothers which can be life saving.
I have been selected and given the opportunity to visit the health camps in Bangladesh this summer and assist with health checks and education!
It is such an incredible opportunity which I am so grateful for! I will be looking to raise £2500 to help with the great work they do out there.
I would really appreciate anything you can donate, and please if you could share this with your friends and family that will be amazing!
According to the World Health Organisation, women in Bangladesh are 21 times more likely to die from maternal causes compared to the UK.
Maa is a grassroots charity striving to improve the dire situation in resource-poor settings to bring about safe, effective, high quality maternal health care. To facilitate JourneyMaa, Maa has established strong links with local universities, medical professionals and healthcare students with the aim of providing long-term sustainable maternal care in rural areas of Bangladesh. JourneyMaa offers UK students and young professionals the opportunity to travel to Bangladesh to:
- Provide educational workshops for mothers and local communities on safe delivery and maternal healthcare
- Oversee the essential life-saving work done at Maas Maternal Health Clinics
- Gain first-hand clinical experience of maternal care in urban and rural resource-poor settings
Money raised will go towards facilitating the Maa health camps that are run as part of JourneyMaa 2023.
