Beau David’s walk from the John Radcliffe Hospital to Ickford for SSNAP

Hayley Kassam is raising money for SSNAP

Walking to raise money for sick newborns and their families in the John Radcliffe · 5 July 2025

In the UK, 1 in 10 babies need specialist care at birth. SSNAP supports sick & premature babies and their families in the Newborn Care Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital. Imagine your newborn baby needing specialist care at birth. Instead of those very special days getting to know your baby as a family, you’re catapulted into an unfamiliar world of incubators, wires, medical tests and interventions. While your baby has specialist treatment, we provide emotional and practical support to help you through the trauma & upheaval. We’re there to help families cope, and provide state-of-the-art medical equipment and nursing expertise that could save babies lives.

Story

Our son, Beau David Kassam, was born 9 weeks earlier than expected and spent 5 weeks in the John Radcliffe neonatal unit receiving exceptional care. At times, the road to getting Beau well enough to come home felt overwhelming and the support from all the SSNAP team gave us as parents the strength to tackle each new day and be there for our son. We can’t thank SSNAP enough for their cot-side visits checking in with snacks and smiles and preparing us for home. They also provide ongoing support post discharge with brilliant baby groups for families who have shared the same experiences.

SSNAP support sick newborns, their parents and those that care for them; by providing emotional, medical, financial and informational support.

SSNAP was founded in 1982 and has supported the Newborn Care Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital ever since. The unit can care for up to 56 babies at any one time and is a Level 3 Centre, the most sick and premature babies from across the Thames Valley, are looked after here in Oxford.
