Story

Hayley's Story...

Never did I ever think I'd be running a MARATHON! I get out of breath running to the fridge atm lol. But watching my dad run the London Marathon in 2007 for cancer, is a memory I'll never forget. I felt so proud of him and its inspired me ever since. This year, I've been given the chance by Mind- Mental Health Charity to run 27miles in the London marathon, with my sister Gemma, and we are dedicating every step to our mum, Jennifer, who died 10 years ago this year. She lost her battle with mental health when she was just 47 years old, leaving behind me and my two sisters. I was just 20 years old, with a new baby and completely heartbroken.

Growing up, I watched my mum seriously struggle with depression. I saw the days where she couldn't get out of bed, the days she felt invisible, the days she would just cry and cry, and the days she believed she was failing, even when she was giving everything she had to keep going. However, she wasn't always like that. She was once life and soul of the party and such a free spirit, before she became a prisioner in her own mind. I've experienced those struggles myself throughout times of my life, especially more so this year, so I know how hard it can be to feel like you're fighting alone. I've seen some of my nearest and dearest at their rock bottom with nowhere to turn, and at times I've felt so helpless. Mental health is REAL. People are taking their own lives on a daily basis, feeling like its their only way out. Others are turning to drink or drugs, the same way my mum did with alcohol, trying to numb her pain.

I'm running to raise money for Mind, who provide support and campaign for better health services, reminding people they are not alone, even on their darkest days.

For me, running the London Marathon isn't just about crossing the finish line. It's about honoring my mums life, her courage, and the love she gave me even on her hardest days. It’s about giving back so that someone else’s mum, dad, brother, sister, friend or child can get the help they need before its too late.

I've experianced many losses when it comes to mental health. I've lost the people I loved the most to it, which encourages me even more to fight this battle!

I've been set a target to raise £2,500, and I know running the marathon is gonna be the hardest thing I've EVER done. But every mile, every blister and every early morning training run will be worth it if it helps raise money for such an important cause close to my heart.

If your able to donate any amount you can spare, big or small, even if its only £1, and help me get that bit closer to my £2500 target, I would be forever grateful. It will help me honour my mum, Jen, in a way I know she would be proud of. And also help keep the torch going for myself and others who struggle on a daily basis behind closed doors.

This one's for you Mum ♥️ xxx
