We provide help and hope to everyone living with dementia.

Story

We're raising money in memory of my granny, Hazel, who died with dementia in April of this year.

My nan was born in London, and left home in her 20s to go and travel the world. She was a real trailblazer of her time, and lived across three continents in a period when women were often expected to stay at home. We'll all miss her so much.

In 1965, she had my dad as a single woman and moved to Margate, where she spent the rest of her life, an active part of her community. She continued to travel, and spent lots of time with us both in the UK and Belgium where we grew up. She had a taste for the finer things in life, loved an afternoon tea and absolutely loved music.

Sadly, in 2017, she started showing signs of dementia and increasingly struggled with her memory. After initially being misdiagnosed, we were eventually able to get her a diagnosis - but by this point she was already struggling with a lot of distress and depression.

My nan's experience was sadly like all too many I've heard before. She struggled to get the right support from the point of diagnosis to having the right social care. She was evicted from multiple care homes because they couldn't support her needs, and it was a real fight getting her continuing healthcare. Sadly, from my experience of having worked for Alzheimer's Society I know her story is not unique.

That's why we're asking for donations and trying to fundraise to support the work the charity does to improve care and support for people affected by dementia.

Her funeral will be taking place at Holy Trinity Church in Margate on Tuesday 14th May at 10am.
