Joey has been a staunch supporter of HCPT Group 97 since it started up by Tony Turner and others back in the 1970s.

HCPT Group 97 is a Newport branch of HCPT The Pilgrimage Trust, which is dedicated to taking children aged 7 to 18, to Lourdes in the south of France each year. The needs of these children can be many and varied, including physical, emotional, social or behavioural. Some may never have experienced a holiday of any kind before. The week also gives parents and carers a much-needed break.

Group 97 has one very special aim, to give children the most fantastic week on a pilgrimage holiday. The Group raise money tirelessly throughout the year to ensure that this amazing week takes place for the children.

Joey was always present at fundraising events – the dances, the walks, and ‘always had a book of raffle tickets in his pocket’ to raise money for the children to be able to experience this wonderful pilgrimage.

Joey joined Group 97 in Lourdes for a few days with friends and family in later years and was able to experience the joy – and incredible peace, of Lourdes, proudly wearing the famous Group 97 ‘reds’ whilst joining in the experience that his tireless fundraising over the years had offered to so many children.
