The Charity, The Story
The Mermaid Centre & The Cove may be familiar names to the Cornish community with many people having used these services themselves or had their partner, family, friends, colleagues, loved ones who have needed these services.
These two branches of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust hold a place in my heart after the recent loss of my wonderful, kind and funny Aunty Tam, who lost her battle with Cancer. She spoke highly of these services - they helped support her and her family, and she enjoyed taking time for a cuppa and cake at The Cove.
The Mermaid is home to the Cornwall Breast Screening Programme (NHS BSP) and the Oncoplastic Breast Unit. They also monitor patients with a family history that maybe at higher risk of developing breast cancer.
At the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Breast Unit, they provide comprehensive breast care to more than 12,000 patients each year. They strive to deliver the highest standard of care to all of their patients and remain at the forefront of diagnosis, treatment, research and training in breast disease.
The Cove is a purpose-built Macmillan Cancer Support Centre. They run a friendly cafe at Treliske Hospital and host regular support groups and events throughout the year. The Cove also provides invaluable services for anyone affected by Cancer including:
* Counselling and psychological support
* Physiotherapy
* Patient support groups
* Carer's support groups
* Wig service
* Complimentary therapies, Reiki, Yoga, Tai-Chi and relaxation sessions
* Nutritional advice
* Look Good Feel Better, make up and skincare for Women and skincare and grooming for Men.
Any donations and support are greatly appreciated.
