Hello, thanks for visiting our fundraising page! A few pals from Welwyn Garden City Hockey Club are taking part in the St Albans Inflatable 5k race to raise money for the Brompton Fountain.
The Brompton Fountain support the treatment and care of seriously ill children at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals. They work closely with the hospital paediatric teams providing a wide range of vital resources and services. In addition, they fund medical equipment and improvements to the hospital facilities.
We would like to support this charity as some of us have had first-hand experience of the Royal Brompton hospital and the fantastic work they do.
Martha (daughter of Heather & Pearly) had life saving open heart surgery at 3 days old at The Royal Brompton to repair her co-arctation (narrowing) of the aorta. She has since had a further surgery at 3 years old to repair an ASD (atrial septal defect - hole in heart) and remains under their amazing care. Now 8 years old, she is the life and soul of the party and of course plays hockey for the under 10 girls!
Lisa's daughter Becky had 2 holes in her heart, and had open heart surgery at the Royal Brompton at 3 months old. Becky was under their care throughout childhood and now at 20 years old, she can do anything she wants and loves nothing more than playing hockey...well perhaps the family dog, Bella!
As a local grass-roots hockey club, run entirely by volunteers, with a thriving junior and adult section, we thought this would be a fun challenge for us all, even after a long, tough hockey season - as well as a way to raise some money for a charity close to our hearts. Silly photos to follow!
The team:
Heather (Hev) - Group Leader, Martha's mum, cool calm and collected on the hockey pitch.
David (aka Pearly) - Martha's Dad, club legend, right-back with a fierce hit. Not running the race, but cheering us on from the side (and someone's gotta look after the bags!)
Martha - An original Brompton baby! Loves her hockey & the socialising even more! A great defender with a mean tackle, no-one gets past her!
Charlie - Ladies 1st team captain, sweeper & all round hockey enthusiast. She plays, umpires, coaches and organises the juniors, no end to her talents!
Lisa - "The Pitbull", don't be fooled by her size, an impossible to shake off defender.
Anna & Ant - Anna, Ladies club captain, determined striker & demon on the reverse stick. Social butterfly & first one at the bar. Ant, dedicated side-line supporter & all-round Welwyn hockey club fan!
Davina - Defender and queen of the aerial, watch out for her power strikes in short corners!
Simon, Leah, Ben, Josh & Sophia - A true hockey family! Simon and Leah not only play senior hockey, but coach their children and the under 10s in Junior hockey too. A truly talented bunch!
Kim - Mid-field dynamo, mega fit runner extraordinaire, even though she sometimes has trouble staying on her feet!
