Story
Update: I did it! It was a warm day and tough going in the second half but I'm feeling very proud of myself ☺️ I'm blown away by all the generous donations - thank you ❤️
And special thanks to everyone that has cheered me on, either on the day itself, or from afar!
Now then, what to do next...
This April marks 5 years since my surgery and diagnosis of mucinous ovarian cancer. Back then I couldn't really see beyond the next year, let alone 5 years! I was extremely fortunate to be diagnosed at an early stage, and I still benefit from ongoing surveillance. Mucinous ovarian cancer is a rare subtype (2 - 3% of cases) and there is so little research and treatment options. For women diagnosed at later stages, outcomes are much worse.
The Eve Appeal is a fantastic charity covering all 5 gynaecological cancers, and I know that running for them will be a huge motivator for me. They fund research into early diagnosis and prevention - but they also support anyone with concerns about the 5 gynaecological cancers (ovarian, cervical, womb, vaginal and vulval) and do amazing work smashing taboos about gynae health generally.
Their Rare Gynaecological Cancer Fund is funding research that nobody else is. Sadly it's a numbers game, and treatment guidelines and research funding is overwhelming focused on the most common types. Every person, regardless of the quirks of their rogue cells, circumstances or characteristics, deserves the best possible chance of surviving their cancer - and thriving beyond it. By donating you can make projects like this happen, which bring us one step closer: https://eveappeal.org.uk/resource/mucinous-ovarian-cancer/
I've surprised myself by how much I've committed to and enjoyed my training so far. I'm buoyed along (and very grateful for) my running buddies, plus Nick and Ida, every single week.
Thank you for your donation, and thank you to everyone that's supported me over the last 5 years.
If you're in Manchester on 27th April your face and cheers will be a lovely distraction from the state of my feet 😂
Helen x
