George, Isla and Erin’s miles for Freya

To run 31 miles in January · 31 January 2026

Freya is a brave, sassy, and spirited eight-year-old who has been courageously battling stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma since December 2022.

Story

George, his best friend Isla and Isla’s older sister Erin are taking on a new challenge, to try and raise as much money as they can to help their friend Freya. They have decided they would each like to run 31 miles in January. A massive total of 93 miles!

In December 2022, Freya was diagnosed with stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma. After completing 15 months of frontline treatment, end-of-treatment scans showed Freya had relapsed. Freya completed her therapy in March 2024. But just as a sense of relief began to settle in, end-of-treatment scans revealed a new and devastating development - lesions in her pancreatic area, on the opposite side of where the original tumour had been. A biopsy confirmed what everyone had feared: a recurrence of neuroblastoma.

Since her diagnosis in December 2022, Freya has bravely endured an intense and unrelenting treatment regimen. This has included countless blood and platelet transfusions, daily G-CSF injections, bone marrow aspirates and trephines, and feeding via a nasogastric tube. She has also undergone a relentless series of imaging procedures - x-rays, MRIs, and MIBG scans - all vital in tracking the progression of her illness. She faced major surgery to remove the primary tumour. During the procedure, a sample of her ovarian tissue was frozen - preserving a hopeful possibility of becoming a mother one day.

In May 2024, Freya began BIT chemotherapy. While there was a small initial response, the treatment ultimately failed to eliminate the disease. Then, in October, she faced her second major surgery - this time to remove the tumour from her pancreas. The operation was extensive, resulting in the loss of her spleen and leaving her with only half of her pancreas.

After a brief period of remission, she sadly relapsed for the second time in March 2025 - just 12 months after her previous relapse - and is currently receiving treatment on the Beacon 2 Trial at Birmingham hospital. A recent scan showed a small improvement, which means treatment can continue for now.

Despite everything she has endured - gruelling treatments, long hospital stays, and constant setbacks - Freya continues to face each day with a radiant smile. She never complains. She simply gets on with it.

Although the NHS currently supports promising clinical trials for relapsed neuroblastoma, other options may only be available outside the UK. Some of these clinical trials come with staggering costs, often running into the hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Last year, George (along with mum, dad, cousin, uncle and grandad) climbed to the top of mount snowdon, and George managed to raise a massive amount of money for Freya! He’s hoping to try and do it all again, but this time with Isla and Erin by his side. So hopefully, between them, they can raise some more money to help Freya, Debbie, Shaun and Alice (Freya’s mum, dad and identical twin sister).

So please, if you can spare anything at all, it would be very much appreciated. Thank you!
