Helen's Swim Serpentine and London Marathon for Leukaemia Care

Helen Smith is raising money for Leukaemia Care

Swim Serpentine 2025 · 20 September 2025 ·

Leukaemia Care provides vital support, information and advice to anyone whose life has been affected by a blood cancer. We not only support patients, but carers and families too whose lives are impacted when someone they know and loves receives a diagnosis.

Story

In 2021 I was diagnosed with Essential Thrombocythaemia (a rare blood cancer) and three years on from that initial diagnosis, my platelet count rose to a level which meant I needed to take a daily chemotherapy tablet. Accepting this outcome has been mentally challenging for me.

Since my diagnosis, physical challenges have become a positive focus and something I can control. In 2023, my good friend Linda and I completed the London Marathon, followed by the cycling challenge of Ride London (100 miles) in 2024. This year we are taking on the 2 mile Swim Serpentine event for Leukaemia Care in September and this will complete the London Classics Challenge! My daughter Hannah has been with us for much of our adventure and we have loved her company alongside her valuable training and advice!

I will also be running the London Marathon 2026 for Leukaemia Care. Running the marathon in 2023 did not go as planned due to a badly timed migraine and although I completed it, I was disappointed not to have embraced the atmosphere and the crowds more. I am looking forward to trying again and having a positive experience of such an iconic challenge.

I am pleased to have been given the opportunity by Leukaemia Care to raise money for this incredible charity. Leukaemia Care is a national charity dedicated to ensuring that anyone affected by blood cancer receives the right information, advice and support. Around 34,000 people are affected by blood cancer each year in the UK and this charity is there to support them through their diagnosis, treatment and beyond.

Thank you so much for your donations!
