Helen Wildridge is raising money for Children Today

26 km walk and cycle

At Children Today we provide grants for vital, life-changing specialised equipment for children and young people up to the age of 25 years old across the UK. Our aim is to ensure that every child and young person fulfils their potential and has the best possible quality of life.

Story

Loyd was born 4 weeks early with no complications and no signs of disabilities. As he grew from a baby to a toddler and young child, he wasn't hitting the milestones the same as his brother Tommi did but nothing of significance. There was slight developmental delay but still not disabled , attended a mainstream school, reading and writing, and doing what every other young child would do.

When Loyd had just turned 7 he had many many seizures and was rushed into the Countess of Chester Hospital, subsequently they rushed him over to Alder Hey Children's hospital in liverpool where his health was rapidly declining so much so he was put into a medically induced coma in Intensive Care . The family feared the worst as we were all called to his bedside to potentially say goodbye to him!!

He has suffered a serious illness Encephalitis, Encephalitis is a serious condition that causes inflammation of the brain . Loyd pulled through this and was woken from his coma , Loyd was no longer the child he once was . Loyd was in a vegetative state, he couldn't walk or talk , he couldn't sit up he couldn't eat so needed to be tube fed . He had lost all the ability to do anything .

He was in hospital for 6 months and was using frames so he could sit up and hoisted in and out of bed . He was using a wheelchair as he couldn't walk, Loyd was now left serverly disabled, and the illness had left him with aquired brain damage.

With grit, determination, strength, and courage, Loyd never quit .. over time, he relearnt to sit, stand, walk, talk no longer needed to be tube fed and gradually became stronger .

Loyd had countless tests and investigations, and it was clear that Loyd had other conditions , Loyd has a rare condition picked up through genetic testing O3D , also, his posture and gait were starting to worsen. Loyd has multilevel surgery on both his legs, and for recovery, the physio suggested a bike . Loyd would need an adult sized modified trike and was funded one though Children Today .

As time passed and with endless medical appointments, Loyd got through his SEN school and began at a SEN college.

Loyds' final year in college was during lockdown, and we studied from home a lot . One topic was around the environment and how bad littering is for our planet, this sparked an interest in Loyd and that's where his love of litterpicking came from , we then found local group called The Ellesmere Port Wombles and meet up as a group as often as possible.

Loyd decided he wanted to give back the people who's helped him along his difficult journey so started fundraising, many organisations and charities have been involved with Loyd helping him one way or another whether its physically or mentally so he really pushes himself and tries his very best to help as much as he can

Loyd has acquired brain damage

Epilepsy

Scoliosis and Kyphosis

Leg discrepancy and used a built-up shoe

O3D oculo dento digital dysplasia (very rare syndrome)

Is under multiple hospitals and consultants

Attends many appointments

And goes through with a cheeky chappy glint in the eye type of way . The charity Loyd has decided to fundraise for is the wonderful Children Today Charitable Trust, below is their story

At Children Today we are proud to help change the lives of children and young people with disabilities across the UK every day.

By providing grants for vital, specialised equipment to families in need, we aim to help give these children more independence and the best possible quality of life – from adapted trikes so they can ride a bike for the first time to a powered wheelchair so a young person can get around university easier.
