Henrietta's fundraiser for Wintershall CIO

Henrietta Fiddian-Green is raising money for Wintershall CIO

Documenting daily work and life on the farm and other places to raise money for the charity

Wintershall, in the Surrey countryside, was founded by Peter and Ann Hutley. We share the great Jesus story through epic productions of The Life of Christ, The Passion of Jesus and The Nativity. Hundreds of volunteers help each year and we need your help to cover the costs.

Story

I am a trustee of the Wintershall Charity. It was created by my father Peter Hutley OBE, to create excellent theatre productions of a high quality that tell the Christan stories. He wrote a nativity play, which is performed every Christmas in the open air and in a barn for the last 35 years. It includes live animals, beautiful music, poetry and even a real baby lying in a manger. Guided to the bible by my mother, he was then moved to write a life-altering telling of the Passion Play that now takes place every Good Friday in Trafalgar Square as a free performance for London. For the summer time, he wrote the Life of Christ which, like the Nativity, takes place here at Wintershall.

Another very important part of the charity is its educational programme for schools, many of which come to visit us at Wintershall on day retreats. Alongside our amazing cast and volunteers, our aim is to educate and tell the bible stories so that children and adults alike can make informed choices about their own faith. And if changes a few hearts along the way too - then that is also part of our mission.

Though the plays have travelled, the central hub and sacred heart has always been here at Wintershall where myself and other family members live.

8 years ago I took over some land here at Wintershall and began to farm it. I rapidly realised buying a few cows and sheep was a lot more complicated than I ever imagined. I now have 50 breeding pedigree Sussex cattle, and 120 rare breed Herdwick sheep. One of my passionate motivations for farming is to provide as many animals as I can to the Wintershall plays. Animals, of course, play a key role in many of the bible stories which we tell - and children love them…!

Now we need to raise money for the charity so that the plays continue to be enjoyed by generations to come. I don't have the knees to run a marathon, and I don't have the boots to climb mountains! What I do have is time to share my daily life activities on the farm as we gear up for Christmas and the Nativity play.
